Paul Black -  Sunday, November 4

Sunday, November 4 will be our last meeting of 2007.  We are pleased to have Paul Black ofMid-America Gardens in Salem, Oregon as our speaker.  Paul is an internationally known iris hybridizer and chances are you have some of his introductions in your garden.  Paul will be speaking on Standard Dwarf Iris and his new directions in tall bearded iris breeding.  If you don’t have Standard Dwarfs in your garden, it is a great way to extend the iris blooming season, as they bloom earlier in the spring than the Tall Bearded variety that most of you have in the garden.

The meeting will be held in the Community Room of the Poughkeepsie Galleria on Route 9 in Poughkeepsie.  Refreshments and social are at 1:30PM and the program will start shortly after 2PM.  If you haven’t been to one of our meetings in a while or you have come to our shows and sales, this will be an excellent time to come and find out about the beautiful flowers you all have admired both in the shows and in your gardens.  Reminder, daylight savings time ends Saturday, November 3 (fall back).

Annual Holiday Party – December 2

Set aside Sunday, December 2 for our annual holiday party.  This year we will be meeting at Cafe Mia (Mexican food) at 448 Route 9, Fishkill, in the mall just south of I-84.  If you wish to join us, you must register.  Registration deadline is Sunday, November 18.  Contact Perla at 845-463-2838 or Brandaliz5@optonline.net.  For those of you that are new, everyone is responsible for their own bill.

Annual Membership Dues

As a reminder, membership dues for those members that are not members of either the American Iris Society or the American Hemerocallis Society are due.  While all of our events and meetings are open to the public, if you wish to be able to vote on club business or participate in our sitter program, you must be a member.  Dues for non-members of AIS or AHS are $10 annually.

Once a year the club buys newer introductions of iris or daylilies for the our sitter program.  We then allow our members to “sit” those plants in their gardens.  In three or four years, the “sitter” brings the increase back to club for the club to offer to members first and then the general public for a reduced price.  Your reward for being a sitter is you get to keep a piece of one of these great plants.

If you love iris or daylilies, we recommend you join one of the national societies, either the American Iris Society if you love iris, or the American Hemerocallis Society if you love daylilies.  Dues are nominally more than the club dues, however, you are supporting the development of our favorite flowers.  Plus you get a society magazine with lots of info.  Being a member of either of the societies automatically makes you a member of HVIDS and you don’t need to pay our annual $10 dues.   To join, go to http://www.irises.org/member.htm or http://www.daylilies.org/AHSmemb.html.

Looking forward to seeing you on November 4.
